The Basic Training Tools and content

The basic training gives the theoretical background and clinical aspects of NA and NVR.  The training is constituted from short lectures followed by small (7-11 participants) group practice workshops. The lectures introduce the basic concepts and terminology of NVR & NA and the workshops are aimed to deepen understanding and practicing the techniques through role-plays and case studies.

Here are the tools and techniques that a basic training is focusing on side by side with explaining the ways and teaching tools we use to enhance the participants’ ability to use it after the training:

  • Escalation Cycles, the FRT (Flexible Response Table) and the Bookmark - Defining and understanding the different forms of escalations is a pre-condition for an educator or therapist to neutralize escalation. Whether at home, at school or in residential settings. The participants will learn how to use the bookmark at different circumstances and will practice how the use of FRT enables to maintain flexibility and preserve the persistence needed with a treatment/action plan.
  • The Announcement: A Rapid Start for a Treatment Plan - The Announcement is the first step in initiating an NVR trajectory plan. The participants will deepen their understanding of the importance of the Announcement as a ceremony that signifies the start of a change. Through clinical examples from their own settings they will learn how to write an Announcement and how to instruct parents, teacher or educators to act it with and in front of the child/teenager.
  • The Sit-In and SMS (Silent Message Sending) - A deeper understanding of the rationale behind the Sit-In and the variants of the SMS will help to promote using it in different settings. Through role-plays the participants will experience how a well-acted Sit-In uses the Power of Silence and enhances Team Support and ability to initiate resistance in front of violence.
  • Reparation acts: Making Amends as a Communal Measure – Through case examples we will demonstrate how reparation acts helps the offender undergo a process of reintegration in the community, whether at home, at school or in residential. A reparation act involves the community, the parents, the offender, the victim and in several cases also the group of children. Specifically, we will show that through the process of reparation, caregivers are able to convey their strength and leadership, and gain a sense of empowerment. Reparation acts serves as a central element that demonstrates the uniqueness of the new authority concept. The participants will also practice how to initiate and use such acts in their work settings and at home.
  • Building a support network for caregivers – The statement “it takes a village to raise a child” is one of the pillars of the New Authority concept. How can we bring “the village” to home, to school or even to a residential setting? This part of the training is a great opportunity to see the challenges in recruiting supporters and to learn how to navigate the complexities involved. Apart from understanding the philosophy of this attitude we will also use a role play to "feel" a supporters meeting and demonstrate the difficulties as well as the advantages of leading such a dramatic intervention. The role-play will be followed by explanations of the different aspects in holding a supporters meeting.
